A performing and musical arts project, closely tied to pedagogy, stage research, creation, and interdisciplinarity.

GAL:

Laboratorio Escénico is a dance, theater, and music company based in A Coruña.

Our shows are multidisciplinary and tackle social issues, using the performing arts as a tool for reflection.

We currently have 3 shows on tour:

As Mapoulas. A performance combining theater, music, dance, poetry, and audiovisuals, framed as a Historical Memory project. It tells the story of the last day in the life of Alicia Dorado, an anarchist from the Montealto neighborhood who was executed in her safe house in 1937.

As Mapoulas is a multidisciplinary stage research and creation project that blends theatrical dramaturgy, dance, music, poetry, and audiovisual elements. A journey from the fictionalization of a specific, historically-based case to a universal narrative.

The piece centers on the historical figure of Alicia Dorado, a 25-year-old anarchist baker, and her safe house located at 6 Carme Street in A Coruña. Speaking in the first person, she tells us about love, life inside safe houses, activism, commitment, her relationships with fellow comrades, the neighborhood, and freedom—within a context of heavy repression that ended on July 10, 1937, with her death and that of her comrades during a police raid.

Blues de Medianoite – Extended Version. A multidisciplinary performance (dance, music, and theater) that flows between a staged format and a concert format. A high-quality blues concert (featuring four live musicians), and at the same time, a dance and theater performance.

Set to the rhythm of blues, it delves into the mystery and sensuality of the night, connecting us to Black roots in movement and music—on a journey aboard a secret train headed for freedom. It pays tribute to the great ladies of blues and the rich rhythmic heritage that comes directly from Africa, always through our personal lens. This is OUR Blues.

Blues de Medianoite. A dance, theater, and music performance designed for outdoor and unconventional spaces. A shorter version, adaptable to all types of venues. It’s especially recommended for nighttime street performances, using the company’s own lighting setup.

This version immerses us in the iconic imagery of the blues genre: the train, the crossroads, the club, the night… It celebrates the great blues women with anecdotes from their lives and careers—often difficult—showcasing their courage and love for music.

We are currently immersed in a new creative process that connects Galician and Cuban culture. MONTE will premiere in summer 2025.

The company is led by Alba Fernández and Carmen Cotelo, who founded the company in 2019 and opened the Laboratorio Escénico Coop, a center for performing arts and music, under the cooperative Laboratorio Escénico S Coop Galega. Since then, they have produced 6 shows that have toured throughout Galicia and across Spain.

We create multidisciplinary performances—featuring dance, theater, clowning, music, poetry, audiovisuals, and more—that invite audiences to reflect on social issues and stories we believe need to be told. All from our artistic vision, backed by over 20 years of experience in the performing arts.

We also offer training programs and expanded activities related to our shows, to share our creative tools with the public. We’ve been leading dance and theater training since 2006, in various centers and intensive programs across different countries. We believe that arts education is a key tool to grow new audiences and nurture future generations of performing arts lovers.
